LCU Accessibility Services FAQ for Students
Are meetings with a representative from Accessibility Services available during campus tours or preview days.
Absolutely! Accessibility Services welcomes the opportunity to meet with you and discuss any accommodations that may support your experience at Lubbock Christian University. To schedule an informational session, please reach out to our Accessibility Services Coordinator at 806.720.7156.
Do students with disabilities have different admission criteria?
No, students with disabilities are held to the same admission standards as their non-disabled peers. If a student is denied admission due to not meeting these standards, they have the option to appeal this decision to the Admissions office.
Having been part of a special education class or having had a 504 Plan during high school, does that guarantee I will receive the same services automatically?
From Kindergarten through 12th grade, students are eligible for services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This legislation specifically addresses procedures within the K-12 system and does not extend to post-secondary education. Instead, post-secondary education is governed primarily by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Under these laws, universities and colleges are required to ensure that students with disabilities do not face barriers to participation and provide reasonable accommodations to facilitate their full engagement in programs and classes. Unlike in K-12 settings, special education classes, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), or 504 Plans are not typically developed at the university level.
Will Accessibility Services actively reach out to offer assistance to students with disabilities, similar to how counselors did in high school?
Universities are not required to actively search for students with disabilities. Instead, it falls upon the student to self-identify their needs.
What are some practical academic accommodations that can be provided to students?
Reasonable academic accommodations are tailored to the specific disability and its impact on the academic setting. These accommodations are assessed and implemented on an individual basis, taking into account the student's requirements. It's important to note that accommodations at the university/college level may vary from those in high school. Examples of reasonable accommodations encompass extended test time, a reduced-distraction environment, access to e-texts, and the provision of a reader.
Will my accommodations transfer automatically from another college or university to Lubbock Christian University?
No, receiving accommodations at Lubbock Christian University requires self-identification to Accessibility Services, providing documentation, and completing the registration process before accommodations can be granted.
Do I need to do anything to renew my accommodations for next semester?
If you are satisfied with your current academic accommodations, simply inform the Accessibility Services Coordinator at the beginning of each new semester and request your accommodation letter to be sent to your instructors.
Do I need to submit a new request and documentation every year?
No, once you are approved, you remain eligible for accommodation as long as you are a student at Lubbock Christian University.
What should I do if I need to request changes to my accommodations?
If you feel you need additional or different accommodations, you can schedule an appointment with the office to discuss your request. You may need to provide additional documentation to support your request. If there are changes in the status of your disability or ˚medication, Accessibility Services might ask for updated documentation to better accommodate your changing needs.
Will my professors receive information about my disability?
The Accessibility Services office securely maintains all disability-related files and does not share this information with anyone outside their affiliation unless you provide written consent or if certain exemptions apply. University personnel with a "legitimate educational interest" may access portions of your student record for relevant purposes, as permitted by law.
How should I go about informing my professors of my accommodation needs if I qualify for them?
Once deemed eligible for accommodations by Accessibility Services, you'll have a meeting with the Accessibility Services Coordinator. During this session, you'll review your academic needs and discuss accommodations. The Coordinator will then generate your Letter of Accommodation, which will be sent directly to your instructors. This letter serves as confirmation for you to receive the specified accommodations for the course. It's recommended that you maintain communication with your instructor to ensure your accommodations are met.
Does the tutoring service cater specifically to students with disabilities?
Lubbock Christian University offers a range of tutoring resources accessible to all students at no cost. The Center for Student Success provides tutors for learning, time management, and core freshman classes. Moreover, there's a dedicated writing lab on campus. Students may also find tutors through various academic departments. Additionally, the Center for Student Success offers Academic Success Coaching as a complimentary service to support students in their academic endeavors.
What steps should I take if I suspect I may have a disability?
If you suspect that a disability is affecting your academic performance, reach out to Accessibility Services at 806.720.7156. Their staff can assist you in navigating the process of obtaining the necessary documentation to verify a disability. This may involve seeking evaluation from the Counseling Center on campus or exploring other available options.
